Focus and Scope

Matsnawi: Journal of Tasawwuf and Psychotherapy Studies is a peer-reviewed scientific journal dedicated to advancing scholarship in the fields of tasawwuf and psychotherapy. The journal publishes original research articles, conceptual papers, literature reviews, and case studies concerning Sufi teachings, Sufi psychology, Islamic psychotherapy, spiritual counselling, mental health, and psychospiritual well-being.

The journal welcomes studies that examine tasawwuf and psychotherapy within relevant psychological, philosophical, social, cultural, anthropological, educational, literary, health, and digital contexts. Such contexts must directly contribute to the understanding, development, or application of tasawwuf, Sufi psychology, Islamic psychotherapy, or Sufi-based therapeutic practices and may not constitute an independent disciplinary focus.

The scope of the journal includes:

Classical and Contemporary Tasawwuf

Studies of classical and contemporary Sufi thought, figures, texts, schools, traditions, tareeqa, doctrines, practices, and expressions of tasawwuf.

Sufi Philosophy, Ethics, and Spiritual Development

Studies of Sufi conceptions of knowledge, love, selfhood, humanity, morality, purification of the soul, character formation, spiritual discipline, and spiritual transformation.

Sufi Psychology and Religious Experience

Studies of the soul, self, emotion, consciousness, spiritual experience, attachment to God, spiritual struggle, religious coping, and psychological well-being from the perspectives of tasawwuf and Sufi psychology.

Islamic Psychotherapy and Spiritual Counselling

Theoretical, conceptual, and empirical studies of psychotherapy, counselling, psychological intervention, and therapeutic relationships grounded in Islamic and Sufi teachings, values, and practices.

Sufi Healing and Psychospiritual Practices

Studies of dhikr, prayer, contemplation, muraqabah, muhasabah, spiritual discipline, spiritual healing, and other Sufi-based practices in relation to psychological health, spiritual growth, and psychospiritual well-being.

Mental Health from Tasawwuf and Psychotherapy Perspectives

Studies of anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, resilience, self-compassion, meaning in life, emotional regulation, psychological distress, and well-being examined through the perspectives of tasawwuf, Sufi psychology, or Islamic psychotherapy.

Social, Cultural, Anthropological, and Educational Contexts of Tasawwuf and Psychotherapy

Studies of Sufi communities, spiritual traditions, religious practices, spiritual culture, character education, spiritual education, the transmission of Sufi values, and psychospiritual development within relevant social, cultural, anthropological, and educational settings.

Contemporary Applications of Tasawwuf and Psychotherapy

Studies examining the application of tasawwuf and psychotherapy in clinical, educational, family, community, cultural, literary, media, and digital settings, provided that tasawwuf, Sufi psychology, Islamic psychotherapy, or Sufi-based therapeutic practices remain the primary object and analytical orientation.

Matsnawi: Journal of Tasawwuf and Psychotherapy Studies is committed to supporting rigorous, relevant, and innovative scholarship that strengthens the development of tasawwuf and psychotherapy and examines the contribution of Sufi intellectual and spiritual traditions to contemporary psychological, therapeutic, and psychospiritual concerns.
